About
Summer Shepherd (Sheps) is a Manchester-based photographer and artist whose practice focuses on the documentary of her surroundings, relationships and in-between moments of the mundane. Her practice, primarily analogue, experiments with discontinued formats and techniques with a preference for hands-on making and tactile results.

Pushing the bounds of the photographic image, Sheps’ work combines process with narrative, often using the technique of making to tell the story. Her love for tactility of construction influences her ideas towards what a photograph can be, often leading to publications and prints that encourage the viewer to come close to the work. In a digitally enhanced world, her fascination remains with older process, analogue forms of making, and bookbinding in hopes of keeping the craft to hand.

Alongside explorations of photography as a medium, she loves printmaking, painting and writing, all of which contribute to her process as an artist, exploring feeling as opposed to visuals. Demonstrating emotion visually without emphasis on the visual quality feels paradoxical, yet inspires her practice as an artist and allows for storytelling in a subtle yet experimental way.
